Road-Trip! Speedpaint in a moving car :)

Well, in large part painted in the car.  I added my hands and some touch-ups later :)

I'm gonna miss that kid.  She's going to be spending the next 18 months in Rancagua, Chile serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. During that time she will be teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ and doing service for the people there.  To anyone reading this, a place for her in your prayers would be much appreciated!

Prehistoric Valentine

This was a sketch for the BYU Sketchbook Club (check them out here!). Whoa, exclamation point with a period after . . . am I allowed to do that?  Should the previous statement have been parenthetical? Should I concern myself less with the intricacies of the realm of grammar in a post on a concept design blog?  Mayhaps . . .

In any case, the BYU sketchbook club toured the Dinosaur Museum where I work earlier this month, and sketched afterward.  In anticipation of the event and a significantly more significant event to significant people in our lives (coming up significantly soon), they decided to make this month's theme "Prehistoric Valentine."  Inspired, truly.  Or at least fun to draw :)

Note: While it may have been appropriate in former times to present to a lover a deer skull with roses protruding from the nasal turbinates, such practices are largely frowned upon today.  Dead things make poor valentines.  Unless, well . . . they're roses.

Dual Wielding

Tuesday night my girlfriend invited me to an experimental music concert of visiting professor William O. Smith, a master clarinetist. No joke, the man can play two clarinets simultaneously! To top it off, he is nearly 100 years old! He played at Jazz clubs in the 1940's, like the actual ones.  The actual 1940s.  As opposed to the . . .  made-up ones.  Take that, conspiracy theorists!  It was the fun :)

Dichotomy

Otherwise Entitled "The Great and Spaceship Building" lol

Ok, I got a wild hair and thought I might do a "sci-fi/futuristic" interpretation of a Book of Mormon story :) This is "Lehi's Vision of the Tree of Life" (which the curios reader may find online for free here), if it had been written in a parallel universe by Isaac Asimov.

This was my final for 2d Design last semester, which is ironic because the piece includes some decidedly 3d elements.  The faces, rod, and arm are Nextengine 3d scans of my face, arm, and a dowel, then incorporated into the final image.  The Spaceship in the background (representing the great and spacious building) is partially painted, but mainly cobbled together from pictures I've taken of Las Vegas Casinos and LaVelle Edwards Stadium at BYU (the Vegas pictures were from a Dinosaur conference for work, I wasn't there gambling lol).  Since the Great and Spacious Building represents wickedness in the vision, I thought it would be appropriate for them to have an open Colosseum on the ship's deck for futuristic sci-fi gladiator matches. Hence the football stadium.  No offense, BYU ;)

Yay finishing a 150 page sketchbook in 3-ish weeks!  I think I'm addicted . . . sketched this guy at the Rapid City Mall over Christmas Break. Poor gangsta. He was having trouble keeping up with his homies . . . .

Speedpaint: Flight

Tonight I was driving home and saw a really cool moon out the window of my car. It was a green light, but I stopped and sketched it lol. This is the resulting speedpainting based on the sketch, which I did when I got home.

At first it was just the moon and the clouds, but the composition was lacking. I decided to turn it into a story from the Book of Mormon, the escape of Alma and his people from the Wicked Priests of Amulon (Full story free online at [link] starting in verse 8)
