David/ My first 3D Print!

The original ZBrush Model of David (his story can be found here).

The MakerBot: Replicator 2, the Harold b. Lee Library's new 3D Printer

David before the removal of his supports

Final cleanup!

The pouch and sling were too thin for this printer; they were reproduced,
but were fragile and came off with the supports. A 3D printer that prints
with wax supports, like the one in BYU's Crabtree building, might have
more of a chance at preserving those kind of details.

Costume

I've always struggled with costume, largely because of a lack of knowledge/ visual library to pull from.  However, this semester I'm taking a history of costume class at BYU, and it's helping a ton. It's amazing how, while technique is important, so much of art and creativity is just about having something in your imagination to pull from. I'm a big advocate of not only educating your hands and technical skills, but educating your imagination. Study outside fields and dabble constantly in new visual material, so that you always have fresh ideas.

These characters are intended to be Nephites from the Book of Mormon.  As we don't know exactly where they lived or what their clothes looked like, I've based their clothes on a combination of Greek, Middle-Eastern, and Argentinian ideas. Not that these cultures would have had a particular influence on the Nephites, it just felt like a believable look.

President Uchtdorf Sketch

A digital sketch of tonight's CES fireside :) President Dieter F. Uchtdorf (modern apostle) spoke, and it was the fun :) Watch the full video @: http://www.lds.org/broadcasts/watch/ces-devotionals/2013/01?lang=eng

(I wanted to noodle it more, but my wife said to "Stop it". She was right ;) )

*Note— my apologies, the codec washed out the image pretty bad up until about 50 seconds :/

Christmas Devotional Speedsculpt

Wacom Intuos 3 Tablet and Zbrush 4r4

Happy December everyone, it's officially Christmas! er, season!

The Christmas Devotional/ Mormon Tabernacle Choir was tonight and I thought it would be fun to sculpt one of the speakers :)  This speedsculpt is of President Henry B. Eyring, first counselor to the Prophet Thomas S. Monson.  Mayhaps I'll put his glasses on at some point :)

A full version of the Christmas devotional and concert can be found free and legal at:

Enjoy!

Speedpaint: Flight

Tonight I was driving home and saw a really cool moon out the window of my car. It was a green light, but I stopped and sketched it lol. This is the resulting speedpainting based on the sketch, which I did when I got home.

At first it was just the moon and the clouds, but the composition was lacking. I decided to turn it into a story from the Book of Mormon, the escape of Alma and his people from the Wicked Priests of Amulon (Full story free online at [link] starting in verse 8)

Speedpaint: Horseman

This was a speedpainting from entirely too late last night, about 2 hours :)  Most of it is from my head, though I looked briefly at a couple of horse paintings.  Lol i need to learn horse anatomy

The basic idea is it's a Nephite horseman being hit by an arrow at the battle of Jershon.  It's one of the sadder stories in the Book of Mormon, but also one of the most inspiring.  In a supreme act of brotherly love, vast numbers of Nephite soldiers died in battle, defending their former enemies.
